Welcome 2019! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! I certainly enjoyed some much needed down time and family time. Here is a little video I showed in a couple of my classes today to get us motivated to think about small goals we can achieve this year. Enjoy! ~Mrs. Cote

December book orders are DUE: 12/10! If your order is a gift for your child and you do not want them to see it ahead of time, email me and I will let you know when it is in. You may pick it up here or I will find a way to send it home with your child in a way they don't know what it is.
Ordering on-line is another great option! Our class code is: TXPT4 Today we needed to do some editing. Students took a walk in the hallway to edit their own papers and then went back in the classroom to peer edit. While out in the hallway, students walked with their stories reading them out loud to themselves. As they came across items to edit, they stopped, put both feet in one tile square, and made their editing marks then continued on with their walk. Students were engaged and seemed to find more things to edit than they had any other revision time. It was a perfect activity to get out all that energy from the excitement about break!
Unfortunately I'm starting to see an influx of papers being turned in with no name on them. Not putting your name on a paper means I'm spending extra time finding out who owns the paper so that I can ensure everyone receives the proper grade and feedback. Putting a name on a paper is something that has been in practice since the very early grades and should just be a habit by 7th grade. A once-and-a-while mistake is something I can look past, but it's become much more frequent.
Yesterday I informed my 7th grade classes that I will now be taking 10 points off for no names on papers. Putting a name on a paper is just part of responsibility and a good habit of mind. Use Class Code: TXPT4 when making online purchases. (See previous blog post for website info) Phew, the last few weeks have seemed like a whirlwind. I will be working very diligently this weekend to get all my grading done and updated for you all in Web2School. We have been digging right in to our class book "Tuck Everlasting" and it's been a lot of hard work. I want to make sure I give the work the look over and feedback it deserves, so your continued patience in this process is very much appreciated.
We are also doing some great revision work to our narrative writing pieces and still working hard on shortening up some of the longer pieces students have chosen to write. (This is a short story, small moment unit, realistic fiction unit.) Identifying parts of speech proved to be a bit tricky, but students did the retake last week and I saw some huge improvements! Nice work everyone! Should you have any questions, always contact me and I'll get back to you as quickly as I can. ~Mrs. Cote Book Fair will be held from October 29th - November 9th during school hours. It will be open during Parent/Teacher Conferences Nov. 8th & 9th if you would like to check it out with your child then.
I will be bringing 7th graders to the book fair during class time on Tuesday October 25th so please be sure they come to school with money for their purchases that day. This week I am conferencing with students to update them on their AR quiz averages. The expectation is that students will read at least 3 books in the trimester and take AR quizzes after completing the book. The AR quiz would ideally be above an 85% to show comprehension of the book they just read. This AR grade average accounts for 20% of their overall class grade.
The conference will be a check-in about how many books they have read and what their current AR quiz average is. We'll discuss goals for getting current books read and strategies on how to read for comprehension so that AR quiz grades will increase if they have been low in the past. This will all be recorded on a slip of paper that I will have students bring home to have signed by you, their parent/guardian. Thank you for your continuing support of our ELA class! ~Mrs. Cote Last year in 6-1 Science we learned about plate tectonics and our very own Dominic created a fabulous song that teaches us all about each type of plate. We felt that wasn't enough and recorded a few clips in order to make a music video. Dominic has since used the clips to create the music video and here it is! I'm so excited to share this song and video with you as well! Nice work Dominic, it came out great!! |
