UPDATED! Thank you for your continued patience with this particular blog post! I've had quite a few technical difficulties trying to upload everything and time has not always been on my side. Keep posted for more photos and videos! Just before winter break, 5th graders researched specific landforms and then recreated the landform using salt dough and edibles. After three bags of flour, 6 containers of salt, numerous graham crackers, marshmallows, dyed frosting, paint mixing, messy desks, messy floors, and messy hands, the classroom was filled with a number of beautiful landforms. Each class presented their landforms in a gallery walk style format allowing each student to practice talking about their landforms with anyone that stopped by their display. These students did a fabulous job! We’re excited to do some work with our hands and get a little messy! Along with the creation of a landform, the students will each have a write-up about the landform they are researching and creating. The students are excited and probably have mentioned making landforms from edible items and wanting to bake cakes, brownies, etc. This is fine with me ONLY if it is fine with you! I will be bringing in quite a few materials on Monday that they can use. In no way should this be a financial burden on you. If your child is planning on making their landform with a baked good and they have your approval, please be sure they bring it in on Monday December 18th. I have mentioned that we are not sharing and eating the landforms, they are for display only. All work will be done in class. Students should not be creating their landforms at home (just baking if they need it). I’m excited to see what they come up with! Have a wonderful weekend! ~Mrs. Cote
Report cards were distributed today! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Grades for the first trimester have closed. No new work will be accepted!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Monday will be a day to hit the restart if the first trimester was a difficult one, it is going to be a day for new beginnings. Get rest and then get ready, we're all going to be one more trimester older!! In the beginning of the school year, as the fifth graders got used to rules and consequences of each class, they learned that for my classroom the rules were quite simple. Rule 1, Respect yourself, your teacher, your peers, and your surroundings. Rule 2, Raise your hand silently to speak. Rule 3, Follow the directions quickly the 1st time they are given. In the beginning there were four consequences. Consequence 1, Warning (A chance to get themselves together). Consequence 2, Behavior Think Sheet (Meet with me at break or lunch, fill out a Behavior Think Sheet and discuss with me what happened, the reasons why it happened, and what we can do differently the next time.) Consequence 3, Parent contact (Email or phone call depending on the severity of the broken rule. Often the one most feared by students...keep up the good work parents!!) Consequence 4, Detention.
A couple of weeks before Thanksgiving break, the rules and consequences were once again revisited just as we had gone over them the first few weeks of school. Closer to break I eliminated Consequence 2 as it appeared it wasn't necessary anymore. At the beginning of this week I discussed with all 5th Graders how by next week they will be a trimester older and therefore the consequences will become more frequent as age often requires more responsibility. Due to this, you may be seeing some emails coming your way...if you haven't already...as age also brings more testing the boundaries and learning from our mistakes. I'm also one trimester older too and continue to learn every day from your kids. Thank you for sharing them with me every day and letting me be a part of their growth. If you ever have any concerns or questions for me about the expectations and consequences in my classroom, please contact me. We're in this together! Hopefully you are enjoying the new and improved blog site! Unfortunately the product I was using before was not as user friendly as I had hoped and switched to this product in hopes to keep my students and families better updated on the goings on in our Social Studies classes.
I will be keeping more up-to-date on the latest events in our class, lessons we are learning, and tips for successful students. I also hope to include student bloggers to this site as well. So stay tuned, and thank you so much for your patience! |
