In the beginning of the school year, as the fifth graders got used to rules and consequences of each class, they learned that for my classroom the rules were quite simple. Rule 1, Respect yourself, your teacher, your peers, and your surroundings. Rule 2, Raise your hand silently to speak. Rule 3, Follow the directions quickly the 1st time they are given. In the beginning there were four consequences. Consequence 1, Warning (A chance to get themselves together). Consequence 2, Behavior Think Sheet (Meet with me at break or lunch, fill out a Behavior Think Sheet and discuss with me what happened, the reasons why it happened, and what we can do differently the next time.) Consequence 3, Parent contact (Email or phone call depending on the severity of the broken rule. Often the one most feared by students...keep up the good work parents!!) Consequence 4, Detention.
A couple of weeks before Thanksgiving break, the rules and consequences were once again revisited just as we had gone over them the first few weeks of school. Closer to break I eliminated Consequence 2 as it appeared it wasn't necessary anymore. At the beginning of this week I discussed with all 5th Graders how by next week they will be a trimester older and therefore the consequences will become more frequent as age often requires more responsibility. Due to this, you may be seeing some emails coming your way...if you haven't already...as age also brings more testing the boundaries and learning from our mistakes.
I'm also one trimester older too and continue to learn every day from your kids. Thank you for sharing them with me every day and letting me be a part of their growth. If you ever have any concerns or questions for me about the expectations and consequences in my classroom, please contact me. We're in this together!
